INCOSE ASEP and CSEP Certification FAQ

Common Questions and Answers about Systems Engineering Certification.

Earn Your Path to INCOSE Certification Through a Caltech CTME Program

Earn INCOSE ASEP or CSEP certification through a Caltech program, with no additional knowledge exam. INCOSE’s Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) credential is the global standard for proving systems engineering expertise. Caltech CTME’s Systems Engineering Fundamentals satisfies the SEP knowledge requirement directly, so you qualify to apply without sitting a separate INCOSE exam.

The two levels this pathway leads to:

  • ASEP (Associate): the knowledge-based entry credential

  • CSEP (Certified): the same knowledge requirement, plus five years of documented experience and references

ASEP and CSEP rest on the same body of knowledge, measured against the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (SEBOK). INCOSE also offers a senior Expert level (ESEP), earned through demonstrated experience rather than coursework, which sits outside the Caltech CTME pathway.

Who participates in these programs?

Systems Engineering Fundamentals and the INCOSE SEP certification is for component/subsystems engineers, software/hardware engineers, systems engineers, project managers, systems architects, and technical leaders who want a comprehensive understanding of the breadth of systems engineering activities and their interconnections across the lifecycle.

For organizations, Systems Engineering Fundamentals gives cross-functional teams a common anlexicond a shared understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle, so groups align faster, reduce rework, and develop programs more effectively. Caltech CTME works with engineering management teams to design programs for the learning outcomes required for individuals, teams, and enterprise learners.

How it works

  1. Complete the Systems Engineering Fundamentals course, aligned to the INCOSE knowledge areas and the Systems Engineering Handbook (SEBOK)

  2. Take the Caltech CTME exam built into the SEF course (a graded assignment in our Learning Management System)

  3. Score 80% or higher, and your result is reported back to INCOSE, qualifying you to apply for the ASEP or CSEP through Academic Equivalency with no separate proctored exam

FAQ

What's the difference between a certificate program and a certification?

A certificate program is education, while a certification is a professional credential. You earn a certificate by completing a course of study, and it documents what you learned; a certification is awarded by a standards body such as INCOSE after you meet a defined standard of knowledge and, for some levels, experience, and it is maintained through renewal. Caltech CTME's Systems Engineering Fundamentals gives you both: the Caltech Systems Engineering certificate for completing the program, and a pathway to INCOSE ASEP or CSEP certification.

What is INCOSE SEP certification?

INCOSE SEP (Systems Engineering Professional) certification is a globally recognized credential that verifies a person’s systems engineering knowledge and experience. INCOSE offers it at three levels: Associate (ASEP), Certified (CSEP), and the senior Expert (ESEP). Caltech CTME’s pathway supports ASEP and CSEP.

What is the difference between ASEP and CSEP?

ASEP and CSEP share the same knowledge requirement, but CSEP additionally requires experience. ASEP is the knowledge-based credential for those building their systems engineering practice, while CSEP requires five years of documented systems engineering experience supported by professional references.

Does this program lead to CSEP, or only ASEP?

Yes, you can pursue CSEP if you have the experience. The course satisfies the knowledge requirement for both ASEP and CSEP; what separates the two credentials is work experience, not coursework. Most INCOSE Academic Equivalency programs are university degrees whose students are early in their careers and so qualify for ASEP, whereas Caltech CTME's program is built for mid-career engineers who already meet CSEP's five-year experience requirement and can pursue the higher credential directly.

How do I get INCOSE certification through Caltech?

You complete Caltech CTME’s Systems Engineering Fundamentals course, including its built-in open-book INCOSE knowledge exam assignment. Scoring 80 percent or higher reports your result to INCOSE and qualifies you to apply for ASEP or CSEP through the Academic Equivalency pathway, after which you join INCOSE and submit your certification application.

Do I have to take a separate INCOSE knowledge exam?

No. The course includes an open-book version of the INCOSE SEP knowledge exam as a graded assignment, and a score of 80 percent or higher is reported directly to INCOSE. That qualifies you to apply for ASEP or CSEP through Academic Equivalency without sitting a separate proctored exam.

Is this the same as INCOSE exam preparation?

No. Exam-prep courses ready you to take a test elsewhere; this is a comprehensive systems engineering course whose completion satisfies the INCOSE knowledge requirement itself. The credential pathway is built into the program rather than bolted on afterward.

What experience do I need for CSEP?

CSEP requires five years of documented systems engineering experience, supported by professional references. If your degree is in a field other than engineering, INCOSE may require additional professional experience. The course satisfies the knowledge requirement; your experience and references are submitted in the CSEP application.

Is INCOSE membership required?

Yes. SEP certification requires individual INCOSE membership, which you maintain to keep the credential active. Academic Equivalency covers the knowledge requirement, while membership and your certification application are separate steps completed with INCOSE directly.
