Philip Maire, PhD

AI Systems

Dr. Phillip Maire is a Machine Learning Engineer and Data Scientist with a passion for designing and implementing end-to-end ML and AI solutions to address real-world business challenges. His background is in systems neuroscience, perception, behavior, and machine learning, with a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Southern California (USC), where he studied how the sense of touch integrates with auditory information to create cohesive perceptions.

During his time at USC, Phillip honed his ability to think systematically about machine learning operations by developing pipelines to ingest multiple streams of time-series data and train ML models focused on interpretability. He further developed an end-to-end solution for high-speed video-frame classification to eliminate a major bottleneck, leveraging deep learning combined with a gradient-boosted framework to create a fast, human-in-the-loop fine-tuning model that performs at the level of expert curators.

Currently, Dr. Maire is a Machine Learning Engineer at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), where he designs custom machine learning operations (MLOps) solutions to assist physicians in cancer diagnosis by integrating data from multiple sources for a comprehensive multimodal solution. Additionally, he consults on how to leverage AI to produce reliable and trusted outcomes using large amounts of unstructured patient data. Prior to this, he held a Data Scientist role at USC and served as an AI consultant for the startup Vital.
