AI Tools for Everyone: A Hands-On Learning Lab (Online) FREE

Practical AI literacy training for professionals, on demand

AI literacy is becoming a basic professional skill. This free, self-paced lab from Caltech CTME gives you a structured, guided path through the AI tools people actually use — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, NotebookLM and Perplexity — for writing, research, design, and everyday work.

You will start with how these tools work and how to prompt them well, then go as far as building your own AI assistant and connecting AI to the applications you already use. Real prompts, real exercises, real work products. No prior experience with AI or programming is required.

Program Experience

This on-demand course, based on our popular live lab, introduces you to the AI tools professionals use for content creation, research, design, and getting work done. It is built for busy people: short expert-led video modules, interactive exercises, and real-world prompts you can apply the same day. The lab runs on our Learner Experience Platform from NovoEd, designed to make online learning engaging, collaborative, and intuitive.

The course follows a deliberate progression. You begin with everyday AI assistants for writing and organization, move into AI-driven research and study tools, and continue into creative applications like image generation and design. From there the course goes further than most introductions: you will learn how to build a reusable AI skill of your own, and how to connect AI tools to the applications where your work already lives.

A dedicated thread on AI for professional development offers practical strategies for career growth, presentation design, and learning faster.  You can also collaborate with peers through optional mini-projects and join periodic interactive check-ins and Ask Me Anything sessions with our AI instructors. The experience is practical throughout, and designed to build genuine confidence rather than familiarity.

Benefits

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Build practical AI fluency: know what these tools can and cannot do, and judge when the output can be trusted
  • Explain in plain language how large language models work, and use a repeatable framework for writing prompts that get useful results
  • Choose the right AI tool for a given task across writing, research, study, design, and image generation
  • Use AI research tools to investigate a question properly, and verify sources and data rather than taking output on trust
  • Build a reusable AI skill of your own, such as a coach that role-plays a difficult conversation you need to practice
  • Connect AI tools to the applications you already use so they can take action, not just produce text
  • Select the right image generation model for a given purpose and prompt it for a specific visual style
  • Combine several tools into a single workflow that produces a well-researched business or personal case for change
  • Apply AI to your own professional development, from career growth to presentations to learning faster
